Why We're Doing This

Social media has become the biggest driver of supplement demand we've ever seen — bigger than magazine covers, bigger than infomercials, bigger than anything from the era when I opened my first store. The problem isn't that trends are inherently bad. Some of the biggest ones this year are pointing people toward genuinely useful, evidence-backed habits. The problem is that virality and evidence quality have nothing to do with each other, and a confident 30-second video looks exactly the same whether it's citing a real randomized trial or nothing at all.

So we pulled 8 of the biggest supplement-adjacent trends circulating right now and rated each one the same way we rate everything on this site: what does the actual published research say, not what does the trend claim. Each one links to our full deep-dive if you want the complete picture, citations included.

MOSTLY HYPE
Sea Moss ("Nature's Multivitamin")

Sea moss (Chondrus crispus) does contain real minerals — calcium, iron, iodine. But direct human clinical trials on sea moss itself are lacking, and the positive seaweed research that gets cited in sea moss marketing was actually conducted on brown seaweed like kelp — a different plant from the red seaweed sea moss actually is. Its variable, sometimes-excessive iodine content is a bigger practical concern than most videos mention.

There's a real, well-documented nutrition story around actual GLP-1 medications — genuine deficiency risk in vitamin D, iron, B12, and thiamine, plus real muscle-loss data. But the "natural Ozempic" and GLP-1-support-gummy products marketed alongside that story are almost entirely riding the trend with no direct evidence they replicate anything the actual medications do.

Not a trend about a new ingredient — a trend about fear of an old one. Creatine is arguably the single most-studied supplement that exists, with 680+ clinical trials and no serious red flags in healthy adults. This one genuinely surprised us. D-mannose has been a go-to "natural UTI prevention" recommendation for years, built on small, older studies. But the largest, most rigorous trial ever conducted on it — 598 women, published in JAMA Internal Medicine in 2024 — found no significant difference in UTI recurrence versus placebo. The mechanism is plausible; the human data just hasn't backed it up.

Fisetin & Senolytics ("Reverse Aging")

Fisetin's mouse lifespan data is genuinely striking, which is exactly why it's everywhere in longevity content. But the one actual human pilot study — 10 adults, six months — found mixed results: 4 improved, 5 got worse on the biological-age test used, 1 unchanged. Genuinely nutritious, genuinely under-warned-about.

How to Vet the Next Trend Yourself

You don't need a nutrition degree to catch most of the red flags above — you need about three questions.

  • Is the cited study actually about this ingredient? Sea moss borrowing brown-seaweed research is the classic version of this trick — a real study, just not about the thing being sold.
  • Is it a human trial, or a mouse study wearing a human trial's clothes? Fisetin's lifespan data is real — in mice. That distinction gets dropped constantly in short-form video.
  • Is this the biggest, most recent trial, or the oldest, smallest one that happens to say what the seller wants? D-mannose's popularity rests on small early studies that a much larger 2024 trial didn't replicate.
  • Does the video mention any limitation at all? Real research almost always has caveats. A claim with zero caveats is usually marketing, not science.

None of this requires distrust of everything on social media — just enough skepticism to check before you buy.

The Bottom Line

Of the 8 trends here, two are solidly backed by real evidence (fibermaxxing's core premise, and the myth-busting around creatine and women), two are genuinely real but come with an important asterisk (sleepmaxxing's magnesium glycinate, beef liver's nutrient density), two are too early to have a real verdict (fisetin, and by extension most senolytic longevity hype), and two are largely riding a plausible-sounding mechanism further than the actual human data supports (sea moss, D-mannose, and "natural Ozempic" products generally).

That's a genuinely mixed scorecard — which is exactly the point. Virality doesn't track with evidence quality in either direction, and the only way to tell the difference is to actually go check. That's what every page linked above does.
