Akkermansia
The "next-generation" probiotic with real human trial data behind it
Akkermansia muciniphila is a bacterial species that naturally lives in the mucus layer lining the human gut, where it feeds on mucin and, in the process, appears to help maintain the integrity of the gut barrier itself. Observational research has consistently found lower levels of Akkermansia associated with obesity, type 2 diabetes, and metabolic dysfunction -- an association strong enough that researchers moved directly to testing it as a supplement.
Unlike most trending "next-generation" probiotics, Akkermansia now has a genuine, growing body of human randomized controlled trial data behind it -- not just animal models. Most supplement forms use a pasteurized (heat-killed) version of the bacterium, which turned out in early research to work as well as, or better than, the live form, while being far easier to stabilize in a capsule.
Insulin Sensitivity
A landmark 2019 proof-of-concept human trial found pasteurized Akkermansia improved insulin sensitivity by roughly 29% and lowered fasting insulin by about 34% compared to placebo, in overweight, insulin-resistant adults.
Weight Maintenance
A 2026 randomized controlled trial found adults who lost weight through a structured diet and then supplemented with pasteurized Akkermansia regained significantly less weight over 24 weeks compared to placebo.
Muscle Strength (Older Adults)
A 12-week randomized controlled trial in adults 60 and older found a specific pasteurized Akkermansia strain (HB05P) significantly improved leg muscle strength and elevated follistatin, a protein that counteracts age-related muscle loss.
Gut Barrier Support
Akkermansia's core biological role -- living in and reinforcing the gut's mucus layer -- is the proposed mechanism connecting it to metabolic health, since a compromised gut barrier is linked to the low-grade inflammation seen in metabolic dysfunction.

A 2019 randomized, double-blind, placebo-controlled pilot trial in 32 overweight or obese, insulin-resistant adults found that 3 months of pasteurized Akkermansia significantly improved insulin sensitivity and reduced fasting insulin versus placebo, with a good safety profile. A larger 2026 trial in 90 adults found that after an initial structured weight-loss phase, participants supplementing with pasteurized Akkermansia MucT regained significantly less weight over 24 weeks than the placebo group (1.2kg vs. 3.2kg, p=0.012).
