A well-researched gut-bacteria food that's also the most common cause of "fiber bar bloat"
Inulin is a naturally occurring prebiotic fiber found in chicory root, Jerusalem artichoke, garlic, onions, and asparagus, and it's one of the most extensively studied prebiotic fibers in nutrition research. As a prebiotic, it passes through the small intestine largely undigested and reaches the colon, where it becomes food for beneficial gut bacteria — a mechanism with real, repeatable human trial support behind it.
Inulin has also become one of the food industry's favorite fiber additives, since it's nearly flavorless and lets manufacturers boost the fiber line on a nutrition label cheaply. A placebo-controlled crossover trial gave 25 adults with type 2 diabetes 16g/day of inulin-type fructans for six weeks and found a significant bifidogenic effect on the fecal microbiota, with the most prominent increase seen in Bifidobacterium adolescentis, alongside increased fecal short-chain fatty acid concentrations — without changing overall microbial diversity. This is one of the cleaner, more direct human demonstrations that inulin does what prebiotic marketing claims: it measurably feeds specific beneficial gut bacteria populations.
