Artichoke extract comes from the leaves of the artichoke plant (Cynara scolymus) — not the edible heart or petals most people are familiar with. The leaves contain significantly higher concentrations of the active compounds: cynarin and chlorogenic acid.
These compounds work primarily by stimulating bile production in the liver. Bile is the fluid that helps break down dietary fats and carries waste products out of the liver. By increasing bile flow, artichoke extract supports liver detoxification, improves fat digestion, and may help lower LDL cholesterol — the mechanism behind most of its studied benefits.
